Temporary Suspension of OPT 180 Day Job for Foreign Students

Students who timely file an application for the 17-month OPT extension will be able to continue employment while the extension application is pending, until a final decision on the I-765 or for 180 days, whichever comes first.

However, As a result of the CLAIMS (Computer Linked Application Information Management Systems) interface failing to consistently update the status of OPT requests, SEVP has decided to temporarily suspend the 180-day OPT job. SEVP reports that a batch process has been developed to resolve outstanding issues. The notice also said that once they turn the 180-day maintenance job back on, they will continue to work with USCIS to update records in SEVIS before the 180 day period ends.
